World-Class Skiing

Tap in to some of the world’s best skiing just steps from Grenier des Alpes.  Winter season in La Grave brings endless possibilities for ice climbing and all snow sports.  The village cable car is an easy walk from Grenier des Alpes and accesses more than 7,000 vertical feet of ski terrain.  Le Chazalet ski area – in the small village of Chazalet – provides a ski school and sunny terrain facing the beautiful view of the La Meije and the Massif des Ecrins.  Chazalet is a short drive and nestled in a valley overlooking the village of La Grave.
In addition to these two ski areas, the enormous ski stations of Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d’Huez and Serre Chevalier are all a short drive away.

Alpine Skiing
Known the skiing-world over as a premier lift-assisted off-piste ski destination, the village of La Grave is home to the cable-car Telepheriques de La Grave/La Meije and provides easy access to vast and glaciated ski terrain. Two separate cable-car stages haul skiers from the village of La Grave at 1,450m to an altitude of 3,200m. An additional surface lift pulls skiers up the glacier to a top elevation of 3,350m.

Backcountry
Endless ski touring opportunities exist in the mountains surrounding La Grave and in the enormous and pristine Parc National des Ecrins. The local mountains offer several refuges along some of the more popular multi-day touring routes. The Col du Lautaret is a popular starting point for many beautiful day tours, as is the ski area of Chazalet.

Cross-country skiing
Cross-country skiing trails groomed for both traditional and skating technique are conveniently available between La Grave and the Col du Lautaret and over the pass in the valley meadows of Serre Chevalier. Citizens races occur throughout the winter season.
